Self-care is essential for maintaining a healthy mind, body, and spirit. By taking a little time each day to focus on your own needs, you can reduce stress, improve your mood, and increase your overall sense of wellbeing.
There are loads of ways you can practice self-care. Choose things that you enjoy and find relaxing. If the process is stressful or you don’t really like what you choose, then it defeats the purpose.
1. Take a Relaxing Bath
Soaking in a warm bath can help you unwind after a long day. Add some Epsom salts or essential oils to the water for an extra dose of relaxation. Light a few candles and play some soothing music to create a spa-like atmosphere.
I like taking a good book with me. Not my phone, but a real, actual, physical book. A nice glass of something cold and icy, a book, and a lovely hot bath filled with my favorite essential oils is my favorite way to let myself relax and escape for a little while.
2. Spend Time with a Pet
If you have a pet, spending time with them can be a great way to reduce stress and boost your mood. Take your dog for a walk, play with your cat, or simply sit and cuddle with your furry friend. Animals can offer unconditional love and support, which can be incredibly comforting.
This is my absolute way to practice self-care. My dogs make me feel a million times better, no matter how bad of a day I’m having. My little loves force me to stay in a healthy routine for their sakes. And they know if I’m feeling low. Just their presence brings me comfort and joy. I love playing with them, training together, cuddling, and laughing at their goofy antics.
3. Go for a Nature Walk
Spending time in nature can help reduce stress and improve your mood. Take a walk in a nearby park or nature reserve, and focus on the sights, sounds, and smells around you. Notice the trees, flowers, and wildlife, and take a moment to appreciate the beauty of the natural world.
4. Write in a Journal
Writing in a journal can be a great way to process your thoughts and feelings. Take a few minutes each day to jot down your thoughts, experiences, and emotions. Don’t worry about perfect grammar or spelling; just let your thoughts flow freely.
5. Practice Yoga
Yoga is a gentle form of exercise that can help reduce stress, improve flexibility, and boost your mood. Find a quiet space to practice, and follow along with a guided yoga video or attend a class at a local studio. Remember to breathe deeply and listen to your body.
6. Read a Book
Reading is a great way to escape from the stresses of everyday life and immerse yourself in another world. Choose a book that interests you, whether it’s a novel, a biography, or a self-help guide. Find a cozy spot to curl up and let yourself get lost in the pages.
Books are sources of comfort for me. During a traumatic childhood, books provided me with an escape. I could be anyone, go anywhere, and experience all kinds of wonders. And today, all these years later, I still love the comfort of a book.
7. Take a Nap
Sometimes, the best way to recharge is to simply rest. If you’re feeling tired or overwhelmed, take a short nap to help you feel refreshed and rejuvenated. Aim for 20-30 minutes, and set an alarm so you don’t oversleep.
8. Listen to Music
Music has the power to affect our emotions and lift our spirits. Create a playlist of your favorite uplifting songs, and listen to it whenever you need a boost. Sing along, dance, or simply close your eyes and let the music wash over you.
9. Get Creative
Engaging in creative activities, such as drawing, painting, or sculpting, can be a great way to express yourself and relieve stress. Make some fiber art. Create a collage. Don’t worry about creating a masterpiece; just let yourself enjoy the process of making something with your hands.
10. Practice Gratitude
Focusing on the things you’re grateful for can help shift your perspective and improve your overall sense of wellbeing. Each day, take a few minutes to write down three things you’re thankful for, no matter how small they may seem.
11. Engage in a Hobby
Doing something you enjoy can be a great way to relax and unwind. Whether it’s gardening, cooking, or playing an instrument, make time for your hobbies and let yourself get lost in the activity. Maybe you like to crochet, do beadwork, sew, or quilt. Maybe you like creating magnificent chainmail cosplay pieces. Whatever you enjoy doing, make time for it.
12. Do a Digital Detox
In today’s digital age, it’s easy to get caught up in the constant stream of information and stimulation from our devices. Take a break from screens for a set period each day, such as an hour before bed, and focus on other activities that don’t involve technology.
13. Stretch or Do Light Exercise

Notice any thoughts or sensations that arise, but try not to get caught up in them. Just observe them and let them pass.

Finally, don’t forget to treat yourself every once in a while. Whether it’s a favorite snack, a new book, or a relaxing massage, small indulgences can help you feel pampered and cared for. Remember, self-care is about taking care of yourself, so don’t be afraid to prioritize your own needs and desires.

18. Practice Deep Breathing
Deep breathing is a simple but powerful way to calm your mind and body. Find a quiet place to sit or lie down, and focus on taking slow, deep breaths. Inhale through your nose for a count of four, hold for a count of seven, and exhale through your mouth for a count of eight.
